Week 6: Social Network Sites Reflection

As Facebook gained popularity MySpace dropped off. Lots of people thought Google+ would be a Facebook killer. Do you use Google+? Do you know anyone who does? Is it a Facebook killer, or is there another SNS that will take Facebook out?

In the past, I did create a Google+ account. I was just giving the site a try and thought I’d give it a browse. From the way I use it, and how I’ve seen my peers use it, I personally dont think it will be a Facebook Killer. I did have Myspace and used it actively until I signed up for Facebook. Back in highschool, Myspace was the most popular social networking site due to the fact that it provided users the ability to decorate their profiles, provide a list of ‘top friends’ and also provided users with their own profile song. However, as I matured, I found Facebook easier to navigate to find users and the profiles on Facebook more simple. This could mean that Myspace may be more popular amongst young teenagers where as Facebook is more user friendly for users of older age. Yet again, from what I have seen, Facebook is more popular and Myspace in the present day and more users may be familiarizing themselves with it in order to reach out to more peers.
The answer to whether Google+ will be a Facebook killer greatly depends on the circle of friends users have and the future features that may be added to the social networking site. Additionally, some users on Facebook dislike the large amount of their personal information shared especially to family members and/or users they are not familiar with. I think than Facebook and Google+ will continue to provide services to users since their services are not all entirely the same. Both social networking sites have different features they enable their users to use. There are advantages to using one or the other and nevertheless, these two social networking sites will co-exist with future changes to the sites making one or the other more popular.

  1. Hi Yaw!
My experience with Facebook and Myspace were much the same as yours. I remember in high school I used to go on Myspace regularly and manage my 'Top Friends' list and change my colour scheme and background etc. Then one day I just stopped and signed up to Facebook. I deleted my Myspace page a couple of years ago, it's so interesting to think I invested so much time in it only to delete it and not think about it at all!
I'm interested to see where Google+ takes us. I've only just signed up to Google+ so I'm still exploring a lot of the features. I like how it connects Youtube, Blogger, and Gmail together. I find it really handy... plus I don't need to remember many login details!
