Week 8: Audio, video and presentation tools Reflect

What is the role of podcasting, online video, screencasting or slidecasting in libraries or information organisations? Do you see them as enhancements to the existing work, or services in their own right?

For Week 8’s reflect activity we were required to answer the question above and reflect our thoughts on this matter. This is the 21st century and technology has become a large factor in our everyday lives. With these said, online videos, screencasting and podcasting have become mediums in which many users utilize to engage with others for a different user experience. Due to this, not every user follows simple step by step instructions as they want to familiarize themselves with these new technical mediums for a better user experience. According to Farkas (2007, p. 197) users no longer follow simple a step by step instructions on PDF’s, patrons want to engage with the technologies and develop a hands on approach. Nevertheless, the use of screencasting by libraries is improving the experience for their users and furthermore leaving the experience valuable. Additionally, with technology such as smartphones, internet and tablet PCs, it is clear that using screencasting may be quicker for owners of these products and simplifies the process of engaging with these users. Moreover, information can be provided to large groups of users in several locations reducing costs for all users. A good example on how screencasting can reduce costs is if it were to be used by a library as a training program or for a tutorial. The intended screencast can then be provided to users willing to view the tutorial and/or training program for a simplified visual method of learning and understanding.

Screencasting software is not expensive and it is quite simple to use. Using Screencast-O-Matic was simple and easy to use. I think using screencasting makes learning a lot easier for online patrons and is definitely advisable for future use by libraries.
